In the Yoruba understanding, every person arrives carrying an orÃ â€” literally, a head. Not the one the mirror shows. The inner head: the seat of destiny, the portion of the divine that is yours alone to keep. Before any undertaking of consequence, one attends first to the orÃ. The self is not found. It is remembered.

Nigeria, where this knowing was kept, is the land Dr. Veronica's blood remembers most. When she traced her DNA, the largest share â€” more than a third â€” led there, with the rest scattered along the same West African coast. She calls it blood memory: the sense that certain patterns, certain colors, certain ways of adorning the body were not learned but recognized.

Painting as devotion

Across West Africa, the painted body has long been a devotional act â€” pigment laid on skin to mark passage, to honor, to make the inner state visible. The Queen of Phoenix series begins there. A woman's face, perfectly calm. Her hair rising like flame. At her throat, the mark of the House: an eye whose pupil is a heart.

The flame is not distress. It is what burning looks like when it is chosen â€” the phoenix consenting to her own renewal. The calm face beneath it is the orÃ, undisturbed. This is the entire teaching of the series, offered without a word: you may burn and be still at the same time.

The fingerprints of the artist

Look closely at any series in the House and two colorways recur: a salmon pink beside an apple green, an orange beside a black. They are the founder's own â€” the colors of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the oldest of the Black sororities, founded at Howard in 1908; and the colors of Princeton, where she became a Tiger. She calls them the fingerprints of the master artist. Every object in the House carries them somewhere, the way a painter cannot keep her hand out of the work.

To sit with a Queen of Phoenix piece is to sit inside an old instruction, dressed newly: know your own head. Attend to it first. Everything else follows.
