COLOMBIAN DREAMS
Lizards, cats, woven patterns, a mandala, geometry running throughout. Colombian Dreams began with ancient artifacts from Colombia and became present-day art that honors the people who walked that land and simply lived. It is made to be looked at — and to be moved on.
Provenance:
There is extraordinary indigenous art throughout the world. Colombian Dreams draws on the artifactual record of Colombia: animals rendered in the old way, patterns of the kind that appear on woven textiles, a mandala at the center, geometry throughout.
The series began by studying those very ancient objects and asking how to make something beautiful for the present that honors the ancestors of that region — people who were living their lives, and who were sophisticated in ways we are still recognizing. Ancient cultures worked out how to do everything they needed with few instruments and particular ways of being.
Symbolism:
The colorways carry two lineages at once.
Some are drawn from Colombia itself — the colors of the flag, the national flower, a particular hat and its weaving.
Others are the artist's own signature, running through every series in the house. Pink and green come from Alpha Kappa Alpha, her sorority. Orange and black come from Princeton — she is a Tiger. These recur across the collection like fingerprints: the marks of meaningful steps along her walk.
Choose the color that speaks to you. Different colors resonate with different people.
Materials & Making:
The Colombian Dreams mat is made to align you. When you move — dancing, practicing, any form of exercise — you need to know where your body belongs. The markings let you place your hands, your feet, your seat, your head, and return to the same place again.
They let you spot. They let you find your center, whether you are looking down at your feet or holding some other position entirely.
Founder's Note:
We looked at ancient artifacts and asked how to make beautiful present-day art we could enjoy. But this is not only a piece to look at — it is a piece that comes into your life for movement, for meditation, for rest.
Colombian Dreams allows us to move better and dream bigger. — Dr. Veronica
